About Helicon

“I begin my song with the Heliconian Muses;
they have made Helicon, the great god-haunted mountain,
their domain.”
 (Hesiod, Theogeny, Lines 1-3)

Hi there! We’re Helicon, Bristol University’s Creative Arts Magazine. This blog and the print issues are brought to you by an editorial team of Bristol students.

Helicon began over ten years ago as a photocopied pamphlet put together by a group of English students. Since these humble beginnings, it has evolved into an award-winning publication encompassing not only prose and poetry, but other broader ventures such as artphotography and film. The society itself has also become an established place for like-minded students to share and appreciate such work, and enjoy regular open-mic nights and crafty workshops.

At Helicon, we are dedicated to showcasing existing and new talent in ever expanding creative fields and keeping you up-to-date with local events and exhibitions. In essence, we aim to bring together Bristol's ever-growing creative community!

The Magazine

Helicon is a termly magazine compiled of a selection of work submitted by students, staff and locals and includes features put together by the editorial team. Every issue follows a new theme, and we encourage submitters to interpret it as wildly and creatively as their imagination will carry them. We want to hear from everyone, and are always keen to see new work and hear your ideas!

Online

This blog is our main website working alongside the print magazine. As well as daily posts by our team of anything quirky or interesting we’ve spotted around the place, this page will be used to update you on upcoming events, features, reviews interviews and much more.

We are also looking for your contributions to the blog - so please do give us an email using the address at the bottom of the page if you are interested in writing for us.

New for 2014, we also have our very own Instagram! Follow us @heliconmag, and if something catches your eye in and around Bristol, we’d love to see it. Post your photographs with #heliconmag and we’ll repost them on our page.

Of course, be sure to like us on Facebook and follow our Twitter page, for additional up to date information on events this year and news about our next issue.
